Glowing Oceansby Firoiu Dan Nicolae
The creatures

The deep-sea creatures of Glowing Oceans

Eight of the book’s 101 deep-sea creatures, each with its three facts, field notes, depth and plates. More are added as the plates are finished.

Ten families of shape

The creatures on this site come from six of the ten families. Each page gives the creature’s common and Latin names, its depth, its size and its range, three facts written to be read aloud, and links to the other creatures of its family.

The 101 creatures of the book are arranged not by family tree but by shape, so that the book can be browsed like a gallery. Each family gathers animals that look alike, even when they are not related.

I Serpentine Cords

Long, thin bodies that coil and ribbon through the water: eels, siphonophores, worms.

II Angular Shields & Hatchets

Flat, sharp-edged bodies like blades and shields, such as the hatchetfish.

III Lantern Spheres & Balloons

Round bodies and glowing lures, from the anglerfish to the snailfish.

IV Pulsing Parasols & Domes

Bells and cloaks that open and close, the jellies and the vampire squid.

V Spindly Walkers & Insectoids

Long-legged walkers of the seafloor, isopods, crabs and sea spiders.

VI Ghostly Phantoms

Pale, drifting forms with long arms or fins, such as the bigfin squid.

VII Needle-Toothed & Bristled

Spines, bristles and needle-like teeth.

VIII Crystals & Neon Skeletons

See-through bodies with glowing inner structures, like the comb jellies.

IX Architectural Towers

Upright, built-looking forms rising from the floor of the sea.

X Amorphous Blobs & Mats

Soft bodies with no fixed shape.
